Get Away From Yesterday
02:51
|
|||
Some people say that you should get away from yesterday
Leave the past behind and just go on your way
‘Cause good memories that you have get mixed in with the bad
And you never get away from yesterday
She told me that she loved me but I was too blind to see
So, I just carried on thinking it was meant to be
But it all came crashing down, I was left looking like a clown
‘Cause you never get away from yesterday
My friends tried to tell me but I didn’t want to hear
About her running around and one day she disappeared
And then it all came out what she was all about
‘Cause you never get away from yesterday.

Swept Away
04:20
|
|||
Just the way she said it, it kind of woke him up
And made him pay attention as she expressed her thoughts
Not that he wasn’t listening to what it was she said
But sometimes minds will wander
And you can lose the thread of the conversation
And he got swept away, completely swept away
Ya, he got swept away, completely swept away
That phrase the way she said it caught him off his guard
Left him kind of puzzled, left him thinking hard
He was feeling kinda happy ‘bout what she had to say
About the look upon her face
that had brightened up a day that needed it
He looked at her and asked himself what makes her face so bright?
What is it that he finds so sweet in the dimming of the light?
Then he felt reminded of the flowers in the Spring
How laughter casts away all the shadows life can bring to each of us

Crime of Opportunity
03:32
|
|||
I was only fourteen when I stole that car
Though I liked it a lot, I didn’t take it far
I ran it down to Buffalo and then I brought it back
It was such a cool car, that ’57 Cadillac
The owner was waiting and he wasn’t too amused
When I flipped him the keys
And explained how they’d been used
He said he’d call the cops and he did it right away
I just stood there waiting
There was nothing left to say
They said they didn’t understand
How I could do it on my own
They said a crime like this was just a stepping stone
Then they took me to the courthouse
And the judge looked down on me
I said “Don’t be too harsh, it was just a crime of opportunity”

The Streets of New York
04:17
|
|||
The last glance he had she was walking through the door
Of a hotel where she lived in the downtown core
She nodded to the doorman who smiled at her and said
Something he couldn’t hear that made her turn her head
He waited for a little while in case she might look back,
Waiting with the drivers that were polishing their hacks
He knew that while he waited, his time was spent in vain,
She never even turned around, she still doesn’t know his name
A simple twist of fate and everything changes
out on the streets of New York
Not much you can learn but make no mistake
it’s just a simple twist of fate
I don’t know how it happened
but she just caught his eye
He said “Hello” and smiled at her
and still he’s not sure why
she even bothered to return
the greetings he expressed
Maybe in a little while
he’ll come to know the rest
So, what is he to do now?
What steps should he take next?
Chance encounters of this type are often circumspect
But even so he wonders, should he call or should he not?
I guess he’s not the first to fall for beauty on the spot

Busy Hands
04:19
|
|||
The day that I turned 21, my Daddy gave me his old gun
He said “Son, be careful how it’s used
‘cause one of these is easily abused”
I cleaned it up to treat it right
And then I put it out of sight in a box that once held my new shoes
Daddy said “Get a job and do your time,
Always keep yourself in line
‘cause trouble’s something you just can’t afford
And busy hands are never bored.”
A lot of time has come and gone and that gun had done nobody wrong
It was put away as safe as it could be in a place no one would ever see
But times went bad and I thought I should do something,
If I only could, to help me change the way things were
I thought about what I could do
And I thought about that box for shoes
It still held my Daddy’s little gun,
A little gun that never hurt no one
I pulled it out of the top drawer
Drove down to the liquor store
With a plan to make things right for me
I arrived near closing time
And as I took my place in line
I fingered that revolver nervously
I felt like everyone was watching me
I should have thought it out some more
There was a bigger gun inside that store
And when it went off
It was pointed right at me

Walk Away
04:07
|
|||
I can’t believe how it’s changed since yesterday
But in one brief moment, I could feel it all slipping away
I wanted to show you somehow
That everything was still okay
One wrong word and it all might fade away
You laughed at me, said I was dreaming my life away
And you’d finally stopped believing in the plans I’d made
You shook your head and smiled
But your eyes gave it all away
You looked past me
And I could see it all slipping away
You said, ”I’m not asking for any favours,
I’m tired of all this talk.
Pull over to the side of the road
And I’ll get out and walk.”
You paused for a moment as if there was something more
But I knew it was over by the way you slammed that door
You didn’t turn around to look back,
You kept walking down that long highway
And I just stood there and I watched you walk away
Through it all I thought that I might find
The one sure thing that would make you change your mind
I tried to stop you leaving but I couldn’t find a thing to say
I just stood there and I watched you walk away

Tillsonburg
04:08
|
|||
Do you remember growing up when things were closing down?
They said, “Chances are you won’t go far.
The only way out of this here town is with a hockey stick or a guitar.”
The Skylark Drive-In and The Strand closed down
Nothing ever stayed the same
It seemed to happen overnight,
Would it ever turn around again?
Now the streets are lonely, no one there in sight
A ghost train whistle calls
Don’t close your eyes, it all might fade away,
Become the life that no one recalls
From Harris Street in Ingersoll,
Take Highway 19 south to Tillsonburg
Tillsonburg, Tillsonburg
Take Highway 19 south to Tillsonburg
The winds of change blew down the street one day
when we all saw that full-page ad
Two brand new plants not so far away
And there were good jobs there to be had
So, if you’re driving into town with the radio on
Turn it up! They’re playing our song!
Now they know what was needed the most
has been here all along
It was New Year’s Eve down by the Clock Tower
When they kissed as the snow came down
Now they’ve kept the promise made so long ago
“They can’t take away our town”

The Late Night 49
05:56
|
|||
The downtown preacher said he’d save us and offered us lifelines
Said he’d take us straight to heaven on a late night 49
But someone found a schedule that had fallen on the floor
And found out that the 49 don’t come around here no more
And that very evening Crystal Billy ran rough-shod over Ted
Said he was disappointed about something he had said
And all our friends just stood around looking on in dismay
Despite what Billy did, there was nothing left to say
By the time the cops came ‘round checking out the news
Everyone had disappeared leaving just the smell of booze
So, they just closed the cruiser doors and drove on up the street
Left Ted on his own to get back on his feet
Then Marnie said she’d get him to the Hotel Jones by nine
That is if her brother’s train did not arrive on time
And we all said we’d be there but it wasn’t really true
‘Cause every one of us had some better things to do
And no matter where we look now, the 49’s not there
That preacher must have lied to us
But we don’t really care
it’s just another call, the one that never comes
And when it doesn’t happen
It’s no surprise to anyone

The Lower Deck
03:56
|
|||
The winter winds are blowing but what is that I hear?
The sound of music playing from somewhere down the pier
Through the doors into the pub, we step in from the cold
The band is holding forth with songs from long ago
Let’s raise a glass together, another round of beers
We’ll sing of Nova Scotia and Barrett’s Privateers
We’ll stuff our coats up in the rafters and push them out of sight.
They’re pounding on the tables at The Lower Deck tonight
They come from far away to search along the shore
Hunting for a treasure that was buried long before
They dream of one day finding what’s been lying deep beneath
But the only gold they ever find is Alexander Keith’s
From the Citadel to Purdy’s Wharf, you can hear the loud refrain
We’ll raise our voice in chorus to the heavens once again
And though the Wild Rover might never more be found
We’ve all come together to make a joyous sound
Let’s raise a glass together, another round of beers
We’ll sing of Nova Scotia and Barrett’s Privateers
We’ll stuff our coats up in the rafters and shout with all our might.
They’re pounding on the tables at The Lower Deck tonight

Better Off Alone
04:12
|
|||
I wonder if you take the time
to reflect on when we were entwined
I can’t imagine that you do
Now that you’ve gone away
I guess it would be fair to say
the only one you thought about was you
I guess I should have realized
when the love went from your eyes
But there you go, oh it’s like they say,
“Hold on tight or she’ll slip away”
It’s a shame from my point of view
that we’ve ended up as two
We had a shot at being one
But over time it all fell apart
Still we broke each other’s hearts
Somehow it all came undone
So, I tell myself to look ahead
Stay out front or you’ll be led
I’ll find a new path on my own
One day when it’s all in the past
I’ll think of you and I might ask
Are we really better off alone?

Missing Tuesday Morning
04:54
|
|||
I just can’t explain it
It doesn’t make much sense
Sunday morning came and went with nothing to repent
No one seems to know me which is good in its own way
I’m living free out on the street and the sun is out today
Tuesday is the day for me
Tuesdays are the best
The shower at the city pool is cheaper than the rest
I prefer the newer port the aged stuff’s not for me
If you leave it in the bottle, it will spoil eventually
Take me to the city boys and show me a good time
Take me downtown where the lesser lights can shine
Take me in a Cadillac or take me in a Jeep
I don’t care how I get there if I leave on my feet
Marty said to say goodbye when he was packing up his trunk
He used to sing like Bessie Smith
When he was two-thirds drunk
The boys would clap, the girls would sneer
The cops would just drive by
Gazing out their window, giving all of us the eye
No one needs to follow what I do or what I say
Nothing seems to matter to the street cops anyway
The time is right to leave here, I’m packing up to go
So, grab those empty bottles and put them in a row

Once The Coffee Is Gone
03:24
|
|||
So, if we leave right now before the cup and the coffee meet
We could clear this town before the sunshine hits the street
And we’d be on our way before anybody knows
There’ll be no one to explain to, nobody to tell us where to go
We’ll ride out in the Chevy and watch the road unwind
I’ll pawn my watch the first day out ‘cause we’ll have lots of time
So, let’s get on our way, we don’t need to pack a thing
An old guitar and a change of clothes will see us through the Spring
Now I don’t want to head west ‘cause that’s been done before
I want to go a different route, due east from our front door
I think that we should do it once the coffee is gone
The only thing keeping us is the radio and that song
The one about the old folks and the dangers on the road
How come they have to play that now, don’t they know we gotta go?
