lyrics
The day that I turned 21, my Daddy gave me his old gun
He said “Son, be careful how it’s used
‘cause one of these is easily abused”
I cleaned it up to treat it right
And then I put it out of sight in a box that once held my new shoes
Daddy said “Get a job and do your time,
Always keep yourself in line
‘cause trouble’s something you just can’t afford
And busy hands are never bored.”
A lot of time has come and gone and that gun had done nobody wrong
It was put away as safe as it could be in a place no one would ever see
But times went bad and I thought I should do something,
If I only could, to help me change the way things were
I thought about what I could do
And I thought about that box for shoes
It still held my Daddy’s little gun,
A little gun that never hurt no one
I pulled it out of the top drawer
Drove down to the liquor store
With a plan to make things right for me
I arrived near closing time
And as I took my place in line
I fingered that revolver nervously
I felt like everyone was watching me
I should have thought it out some more
There was a bigger gun inside that store
And when it went off
It was pointed right at me
