about
Earlier this year we played a set at Toronto's legendary Dakota Tavern that featured 7 new, original tunes we had never recorded and never performed live before. The last song of the set garnered some interesting comments from the audience, including “Sounds like Blue Rodeo crossed with Tom Waits” and “That song was swampy as F**K!”. With that kind of response, we just knew we had to record the song.
The Devil was citing scripture while we were drinking late last night
I began to wonder who was wrong and who was who was likely right
Another glass of wine I thought would make it all come clear
But my head began to buzz, and my eyes began to tear
So I asked, "Who's in charge here? What is really going on?"
I could not see clearly, though opinions had been drawn
And I was just confused, no idea what came next
So I tossed back another glass of wine and thought, "This is too complex"
The Devil cites scripture
That's what the Bible read
So everyone's left wondering
When the Devil cites scripture, who should we believe?
It cannot be so simple, though it's not clear to me
No matter how hard I try, I just can't seem to see
'Cause there's so much left to understand, so much to explain
Like how the Devil gets inside your head and causes so much pain
The Devil cites scripture
That's what the Bible read
So everyone's left wondering
When the Devil cites scripture, who should we believe?
